Considering to be one of the nastier shows out there, Blood Royale lives up to that reputation in one scene but otherwise turns in a very engaging show.

Audio:
For our primary viewing session, we listened to this show in its original language of Japanese. The two episodes feature a pretty decent stereo mix though there isn't a lot of real directionality to it since it's a straightforward dialogue piece for the most part. There's a general lack of action elements outside of the first few minutes of the show and the remainder of it has the music track taking up a good part of the soundstage so that it would drown out much of what ambient effects there may be. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout however and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Originally released to video in 2002, the transfer for this show is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and looks really good and showcases the style used well. With a lot of almost artsy type of shots and colors used along with non-standard colors for a lot of it combined with the letterbox look, the show has a very strong and almost unique feel to it that helps it stand out well. Colors look great though there's some chroma noise in some of the reds and a touch of color gradation that's visible but presumably related to the digital paint style. Aliasing is pretty much as minimal as it can be and overall this is a good looking show.

In Summary:
Blood Royale features one sequence that I will continually skip over, but the rest of it merits repeated viewings. This is an engaging domination set of episodes that uses a great backdrop for the characters and gives each of them their own motivations for what they do. Even better, the ending plays out to great satisfaction and even goes to the point of really encouraging a sequel of some sort. I had feared this title based on comments made but in the end it's something that while probably better suited for the hardcore crowd is something that I'll definitely recommend for its great designs, solid sex and interesting characters.
